EndNote is a citation management software that allows the user to import citations into the software and easily integrate the citations into a research paper or presentation in any citation style.

1. EndNote Versions: There are two versions of EndNote—EndNote desktop and EndNote online. The online version is a pared down version of EN desktop, but might be a good choice for those who don’t need the robust features of EN desktop. Most of our training materials speak to the desktop version, however, because that is the most widely used version on our campus.   Avoid making a suggestion of which version to use—instead, refer them to their professor or committee chair.

2. Getting EndNote Desktop: EN desktop can be downloaded by using the link on the Library’s EndNote webpage, which points to the UTK software distributio site: A couple of notes:
  1. Password must be up to date.
  2. Software License Keys & Extraction: Downloading instructions with EndNote downloads is mandatory. Follow all directions, particularly extraction (unzipping). You MUST unzip EndNote BEFORE running the installation. If you fail to do so, you will see a box that requests input of a license and product key (there is no license or product key). If you see this box, choose “Cancel” and return to the zipped file & “Extract All”.
3. Exporting Citations from Library Databases to EndNote: Use this guide: https://guides.lib.utc.edu/EndNoteGuide for further details and directions

If they have more questions, refer them to Make a Research Appointment: https://www.utc.edu/library/help/request-an-appointment so that someone can help them one-on-one with it.
