Many ENGL 1010/1011 professors assign a synthesis essay; most require only a few sources and many times they can be popular sources. Students need to gather sources and synthesize different perspectives. Most students need help with finding the right sized topic (finding angles and perspectives). Many students say things like "I am researching climate change" or something so broad that it couldn't be covered with just 3 sources. Best bet is to talk about picking an angle and make sure they check their assignment requirements for sources.
