Many ENGL 1020 professors assign an annotated bibliography assignment requiring students to find a mix of scholarly and popular sources. Later in the semester they write a research paper. Many students need help finding the right size topic, or the right perspective. Some may need to be guided to narrowing their topic down a bit. Also, they may not understand how to find scholarly sources on their exact topic (for example: they are researching felony disenfranchisement in Tennessee, but the only scholarly sources are from other states)
