We have printers available to use on the ground, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. You can print either from one of our computers (just hit file--> print), or from your own laptop by uploading your document to mocsprint.utc.edu. Once you send or upload a document to the printer, it will be ready to print immediately. Swipe your MocsCard to release your prints. For full information on how to print at the library, look at this website: https://www.utc.edu/library/services/technology/printing.php

For Faculty: Yes! For instructions on how to request a scan of something in our collection, follow this link: https://www.utc.edu/library/services/faculty-staff/request-scan-library-materials

For Students: Unfortunately, no. You can, however, place a hold on the item, check it out, then use one of our scanners here at the library to scan a few pages of the book.
(We may be able to make exceptions to this for distance students. Take student's information and forward it to Al if you get a scanning request from a distance student.)

My professor has asked for .gov or .edu sources, what does that mean?

93 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Jun 06, 2023    Sources Research

.gov sources are published by a US government source, .edu sources are published by US educational institution.

Government sources are generally considered legitimate and reliable, however with .edu sources, be aware that sometimes student work gets published that way! Make sure you read everything critically.

I'm struggling with EndNote, can you help me?

78 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Dec 05, 2024    Citations Technology

EndNote is a citation management software that allows the user to import citations into the software and easily integrate the citations into a research paper or presentation in any citation style.

1. EndNote Versions: There are two versions of EndNote—EndNote desktop and EndNote online. The online version is a pared down version of EN desktop, but might be a good choice for those who don’t need the robust features of EN desktop. Most of our training materials speak to the desktop version, however, because that is the most widely used version on our campus.   Avoid making a suggestion of which version to use—instead, refer them to their professor or committee chair.

2. Getting EndNote Desktop: EN desktop can be downloaded by using the link on the Library’s EndNote webpage, which points to the UTK software distributio site: A couple of notes:
  1. Password must be up to date.
  2. Software License Keys & Extraction: Downloading instructions with EndNote downloads is mandatory. Follow all directions, particularly extraction (unzipping). You MUST unzip EndNote BEFORE running the installation. If you fail to do so, you will see a box that requests input of a license and product key (there is no license or product key). If you see this box, choose “Cancel” and return to the zipped file & “Extract All”.
3. Exporting Citations from Library Databases to EndNote: Use this guide: https://guides.lib.utc.edu/EndNoteGuide for further details and directions

If they have more questions, refer them to Make a Research Appointment: https://www.utc.edu/library/help/request-an-appointment so that someone can help them one-on-one with it.

OR, if patron is struggling with downloading/installing EndNote, refer them to Campus IT.

ENGL 1020 Rhetoric and Composition

75 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Jun 12, 2023    Research

Many ENGL 1020 professors assign an annotated bibliography assignment requiring students to find a mix of scholarly and popular sources. Later in the semester they write a research paper. Many students need help finding the right size topic, or the right perspective. Some may need to be guided to narrowing their topic down a bit. Also, they may not understand how to find scholarly sources on their exact topic (for example: they are researching felony disenfranchisement in Tennessee, but the only scholarly sources are from other states)

Take a look at the Rhetoric and Composition guide, here: https://guides.lib.utc.edu/rhetoric_and_composition

To get there, just click Research Guides on the homepage, and find it under the Course Guides list.

How do I check out a physical book/journal/magazine from the library?

71 views   |   0 Vote this question as useful.   0 Vote this question as not useful.   |   Last updated on Jun 06, 2023    Borrowing

To check out an item from the physical collection, you have two options.
  1.  Come to the library, go down to the stacks to find the book or books you'd like to check out, then bring it back upstairs to the Checkout Desk to check it out.
  2. Place a hold on the item, then a library staffer will retrieve it from the stacks and we'll email you when it's ready to pick up from the 1st floor Checkout Desk or via contactless pickup from a locker in our Chamberlain Lobby.

For instructions on how you can place a hold on an item, follow this link:
https://www.utc.edu/library/services/check-out-renew/request-item.php

We're not offering to mail items anymore, but if a patron requests it we may be able to on a case-by-case basis.
